The past 18 months have been a challenge to say the least. With a global pandemic, economy struggles and loss of all sorts, society has had to endure a lot. It seems lockdowns are coming and going, and even though some locations are experiencing more freedom than others, we’re all feeling uncertain and on edge. No matter where you are or what your situation is, we wanted to put together some tips for getting through lockdown to help you navigate this crazy time.
Move and stretch
We hate to state the obvious, but exercise really does help when you’re feeling unmotivated, stressed or anxious. There’s something about putting your energy into an activity that will only benefit you that makes you feel good on the inside and outside. Not wanting to do anything too strenuous? Give meditation a crack to help clear your mind out from any overwhelming thoughts. Think of meditation like yoga for the brain - give your mind a chance to calm down and stretch it out.
In with the old and in with the new!
Use lockdown as a chance to give yourself the time to try a new hobby or rediscover old ones. As time goes on, it’s easy to forget to take a time out to do things that make us feel good as we get caught up in the hustle of everyday life. Used to be an avid painter? Pick up the brush and get back into it one stroke at a time! Used to read in your spare time? Join a virtual book club and dive right in! Whether you want to try out a new hobby, or you’ve lost touch with an old one, lockdown is a great opportunity to set aside the time to focus on yourself.
Upskill in your downtime
All the gear but no idea? Living in Australia, we’re lucky to have access to the internet with endless access to resources. Instead of using it to online shop on the regular, why not invest your time into upskilling in your area, or an area of interest. There are plenty of courses available for you to dive into, some are even free! You could leave lockdown with valuable experience that kickstarts your next career move.
Talk it out
While many things have come to a halt, looking after your mental health shouldn’t be one of them. If you’ve been having a rough time and can’t seem to shake it, it’s best to talk it out with a professional. We’re fortunate that in Australia, most health practitioners allow phone or Zoom calls to ensure the general public are getting the help they need. Alternatively, there are many helplines available to talk you through whatever it is you might be feeling.
