How Long Does Loan Approval Take?

When an unexpected expense comes up, one of the first questions you might ask is: how long does loan approval take?
There is no single answer. Depending on the type of credit or financial product you apply for, an assessment could take anywhere from minutes to several business days or longer.
The provider may need to check your identity, income, expenses and other financial information before making a decision. Approval is never automatic, even when an application process is advertised as fast or completed online.
In this guide, we explain how loan approval generally works, what can slow an application down and how our own assessment and funding process works if you're considering a MyPayNow wage advance.
How long does loan approval usually take?
Loan approval times vary significantly between products and providers.
As a broad guide:
Type of application | Possible assessment timeframe |
Online pay advance or small credit application | Minutes to several hours |
Unsecured personal loan | Same day to several business days |
Car finance | One to several business days |
Home loan pre-approval | Several business days or longer |
Full home loan approval | Several days to several weeks |
These are general indications only. They are not promised processing times.
Your actual timeframe can depend on the provider, the complexity of your circumstances, whether your information can be verified automatically and whether additional documents or a manual review are required.
It is also important to separate approval from funding.
Approval means your application has been accepted, subject to any remaining requirements. Funding is when the money is actually transferred to you. Those two events do not necessarily happen at the same time.
What happens during the loan approval process?
The exact process depends on what you are applying for, but most financial applications involve several common stages.
1. You submit your application
You will usually be asked to provide information about yourself and your financial circumstances.
Depending on the product, this could include:
your name, address and contact details
proof of identity
employment details
income information
bank statements or transaction information
regular living expenses
existing debts and financial commitments
the amount you want
the reason you are applying.
Providing complete and accurate information can help prevent avoidable delays.
2. Your information is verified
The provider may check whether the identity, employment, income and financial information you supplied is accurate.
For conventional credit products, a lender may also review your credit report.
ASIC explains that responsible lending obligations for regulated credit can require credit providers to make reasonable inquiries about a consumer's financial situation, requirements and objectives, take reasonable steps to verify their financial situation and assess whether a proposed credit contract is unsuitable. These requirements are one reason a fast application form does not necessarily mean instant approval.
3. Your ability to make the repayments is assessed
A provider may consider whether you appear able to meet the proposed repayments without experiencing substantial financial difficulty.
Income is only one part of that assessment.
Depending on the product and provider, factors such as your regular expenses, existing commitments, transaction history and repayment obligations may also be relevant.
Having enough income to meet a basic eligibility requirement does not guarantee that an application will be approved.
4. A decision is made
Your application might be:
approved
declined
referred for manual assessment
paused while further information is requested.
Applications that can be assessed and verified automatically may be completed more quickly.
When something needs to be reviewed by a person, the process will generally take longer.
5. You complete any final requirements
For a conventional loan, you may need to review and accept a credit contract before the lender can transfer the funds.
With other financial products, you may need to confirm the amount you want and the repayment arrangements.
Once funds are sent, the receiving bank and payment network can also affect how quickly they appear in your account.
What can delay loan approval?
Even an online application can take longer than expected when the provider cannot verify the information it needs.
Some common causes include the following.
Incomplete or incorrect information
Missing fields, incorrect account details or inconsistent information may prevent an automated system from completing the assessment.
Before submitting an application, double-check important details such as your name, income, employment information and bank account.
Difficulty verifying your income
An application may require additional review if your income is irregular, recently changed or difficult to identify from your transaction history.
This may be relevant for casual workers, contractors, people who have recently changed jobs or anyone receiving income from several sources.
Bank connection or document problems
Many online providers rely on digital transaction information.
A bank connection problem, unsupported account or technical interruption may mean information needs to be provided or reviewed another way.
Manual assessment
Not every application can be decided automatically.
A referral for manual assessment does not necessarily mean you will be declined. It simply means more information or consideration may be required before a decision can be made.
Applying when support staff are unavailable
Automated services may operate outside standard business hours, but an issue requiring customer support or manual intervention may not be resolved immediately.
A more complex financial position
Existing debts, variable expenses, failed repayments or unusual account activity may require closer consideration.
For conventional credit, a credit report may also be relevant. Moneysmart says lenders may consider information such as late or missed repayments, unpaid debts, defaults and multiple recent credit applications when assessing an application.
How can you help avoid unnecessary delays?
You cannot guarantee that an application will be approved quickly, but you can reduce some preventable delays.
Before applying:
check the provider's eligibility requirements
have your identification and income details ready
make sure your employment information is current
check your bank details carefully
enter information exactly as it appears on official records
review your application before submitting it
respond promptly if additional information is requested.
Always provide accurate information.
Do not alter documents, conceal existing debts or provide misleading information in an attempt to receive approval. Apart from the broader consequences, incorrect information may delay an assessment or result in the application being declined.
Does a fast application mean guaranteed approval?
No.
A fast digital application describes the application process. It does not guarantee the outcome.
You still need to satisfy the provider's eligibility and assessment requirements.
Claims such as “guaranteed approval” should be treated cautiously, particularly where they suggest that your income, expenses or financial circumstances will not be considered.
A responsible assessment takes your circumstances into account.
How long does MyPayNow approval take?
Our product is a wage advance, rather than a conventional personal loan. It is designed to give eligible working Australians access to a portion of their regular employment income before payday.
It generally takes about five minutes to set up your MyPayNow account and be assessed for an advance. This is an indicative timeframe, not a promise that every assessment will be completed or approved within five minutes. When you create an account with us, we ask for information including your employment and salary details and recent bank transaction information so we can assess your eligibility.
Our current eligibility requirements include being an Australian resident aged at least 18, receiving regular employment income and meeting our other eligibility and assessment criteria.
Our current minimum take-home income from employment is:
$450 per week
$900 per fortnight
$1,950 per month. Centrelink benefits cannot be your only source of income. You may still be eligible if you receive Centrelink as well as sufficient regular employment income and meet our other criteria. Meeting these basic eligibility requirements does not guarantee approval.
How quickly do we send funds after approval?
Once your account has been approved and you make an accepted advance request, we send the payment through Osko on Australia's New Payments Platform.
You'll usually receive the funds within seconds, including outside standard business hours. However, this is not guaranteed. Availability depends on your receiving bank supporting Osko and the payment service being available at the time. This is a funding timeframe after approval.
It should not be interpreted as a promise that a new account or advance application will be assessed or approved within seconds.
What does a MyPayNow wage advance cost?
Processing speed is only one factor to consider. You should also understand what the advance will cost and when it needs to be repaid.
Our current pricing is:
a fixed fee equal to 5% of the amount advanced
24% interest per annum on the outstanding balance
interest capped at a maximum period of 62 days. For example, if you take a $100 advance and repay it after seven days:
Cost | Amount |
Advance | $100.00 |
5% fee | $5.00 |
Approximate interest for 7 days | $0.48 |
Total repayment | $105.48 |
That example reflects the current example published on our website. Your advance limit is based on up to a quarter of your identified net pay, capped at a maximum of $2,000. Once you have taken an advance, you cannot request another one until the outstanding balance has been repaid in full. Always check the current terms and information in your account or on our website before confirming an advance because product terms can change.
Should approval speed be your main consideration?
Speed can be useful when you're dealing with an unexpected expense, but it should not be the only thing you consider.
Before using credit or requesting a wage advance, think about:
how much you will repay in total
when the repayment is due
how much money you will have left for rent, groceries, transport and bills
whether the expense can wait
whether the business you owe offers a payment plan
whether you have appropriate savings available
whether hardship assistance or financial counselling would be more suitable.
A quick assessment does not automatically make a financial product affordable or appropriate for your circumstances.
With a wage advance, you are also bringing forward money that would otherwise be available from a later pay cycle. Consider whether the repayment could leave you short when your normal payday arrives.
Our product is designed for customers who can afford their repayment without financial hardship and is not designed for customers who are already experiencing financial hardship.
What should you do if your application is declined?
Being declined does not necessarily mean the best next step is to immediately apply somewhere else.
First, check whether the provider has explained the decision or asked you to correct information.
Depending on the situation, it may be helpful to:
correct an error in your application
update your employment information
review your income and regular expenses
check your credit report where relevant
wait until your circumstances have changed
consider a lower-cost or non-credit alternative.
For conventional credit applications, applying repeatedly within a short period may also affect your credit profile. Moneysmart notes that credit applications are recorded on your credit report and recommends understanding why an application was rejected before applying again.
Frequently asked questions
Can a loan be approved on the same day?
Some applications may be approved on the same day when the provider uses a digital assessment process and can verify the required information quickly.
That does not mean same-day approval is guaranteed. Applications requiring additional information or manual assessment can take longer.
Is pre-approval the same as final approval?
No.
Pre-approval usually means a lender has made a preliminary assessment based on the information available at that time.
Final approval can still depend on further checks, supporting documents, valuation information or details about the transaction.
Does loan approval mean the money has been sent?
Not necessarily.
You may still need to accept an agreement or satisfy final requirements after approval. Transfer times may then depend on the lender's payment process and your bank.
Can missing information delay an application?
Yes.
Missing, outdated, inconsistent or unclear information can prevent an application from being assessed automatically and may result in the provider requesting more information.
Does MyPayNow perform a credit score check?
We do not make a credit enquiry on your file with a credit reporting agency. However, that does not mean approval is automatic.
We still assess information including your employment, identified income and bank transaction information before determining whether an advance is available to you.
Can I use MyPayNow if I receive Centrelink?
Centrelink payments cannot be your only source of income.
You need to receive regular employment income that meets our requirements and satisfy our other eligibility and assessment criteria.
Check your eligibility details before requesting funds
How long loan approval takes depends on the product, provider and information required to complete the assessment.
Having accurate and current information ready can help prevent unnecessary delays, but no legitimate application process should be treated as a guarantee of approval.
With us, eligible working Australians can request early access to a portion of their regular employment income through our online wage advance service. Before making a request, take the time to review our current eligibility requirements, fees, interest and repayment arrangements and consider how the repayment will affect your next pay cycle.
You can review our current pay advance information and FAQs to understand how our service works before deciding whether it is appropriate for your circumstances.
